Oak Hill Cemetery
History
Oak Hill Cemetery may very well be the largest in the county with its nearly 4,600 names. The earliest recorded burial is Martha Greenes in 1859 and the earliest birth year is Cornelius Homan's in 1794. Several people lived to be a hundred years old or more. Leona Luise Hemenas is probably the oldest occupant at 105 years of age. Two veterans from the Texas Revolution, at least 26 Confederate soldiers, and 3 from the Spanish-American War are interred here. Some tombstones are broken or worn by the elements that they are unreadable. There are some graves marked only with a funeral mark

Aesthetic Regulations Oak Hill Cemetery

  1. The Cemetery reserves the right to remove all flowers, wreaths or other decorations from lots as soon as they become unsightly. The grounds will be cleared of decorations at the direction of the City sexton.  Such cleaning dates will be posted on the cemetery’s web address.  To save any decorations placed on a grave, the decorations should be removed prior to these dates. 
  2. Fresh and artificial flower arrangements are allowed on lots in a disposable vase. 
  3. Items not allowed to be placed on a lot within the Cemetery include, but are not limited to, the following: shepherd’s hooks, standup decorations, coping, curbing, decorative rocks, fencing, benches, chairs, hedging, grave mounds, borders or enclosures. No decorations of any type are permitted in trees or Cemetery plantings.
  4. Flags may be placed on graves on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Flag Day, and Veterans Day. Flags should be kept to 12” by 18” in size or smaller. Flags are subject to removal by Cemetery within ten (10) days of the Holiday.
  5. Trees and shrubs are placed throughout the Cemetery by the Cemetery for overall beauty and serenity of the grounds. Individual graves are not permitted to have trees or shrubs. Any such tree or shrub not approved by the Cemetery may be removed without notice to the lot owner.
  6. Glass is prohibited at all times.
  7. Devotional lights of any type are prohibited in the Cemetery.
  8. The Cemetery shall have the right to remove all objects whose appearance and condition warrant removal and/or violate the Cemetery’s rules and regulations. The Cemetery also will not be liable for any flower or decoration removed or lost by any cause.
  9. Foot markers or foot stones shall be installed and maintained flush to ground level.
